Coventry teacher recognised in national kindness awards for SEND work
A Coventry teacher says she has been blown away by ‘heartwarming’ comments from staff and parents after being recognised in a national kindness awards programme.
Donna Igoe, Special Education Needs and Disabilities Coordinator at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, part of the Romero Catholic Academy, has been named runner up in the Kindness Awards initiative run by School of Kindness.
The awards, which celebrate inspiring individuals, classes and schools, are run by the School of Kindness, part of the 52 Lives Charity. The charity aims to spread kindness with the help of almost 100,000 supporters around the world.
Donna was awarded the prize after impressing judges with her commitment to creating a “kind culture” in the school on Brays Lane.
The teacher, who joined Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in 2003 and became SENDCO in 2022, was nominated by colleagues for the award, with parents also sending in kind words about her work with their children.
One comment said Donna is the “glue of the SEND team at Sacred Heart” and “she takes every child’s difference, worry or need and makes it her mission to prioritise them and make them feel special and important”.
A colleague said “she works tirelessly to ensure the best outcomes for the children and their families, and is always available to support staff with supporting the needs of all children”.
Donna said: “I did not expect it at all. It’s really heartwarming to see all of the lovely comments that parents and colleagues sent in.
“I would never be one to put myself forward for an award so to have this appreciation from the people you work with every day is really special.
“We have a brilliant team here who will always rise to the challenge of meeting every child’s needs, and incredible children who we all want to do our very best for.
“The award is really a testament to the way all of our staff approach SEND, and it’s amazing to see that recognised.”
