Buttress architect studio to lead major projects at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral
Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral is thrilled to announce the appointment of Buttress to oversee key transformative projects.
Selected by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool, the collaboration marks a significant step in enhancing and securing the future of our cathedral.
Designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd and completed in 1967, our Grade II* listed cathedral, with its distinctive circular form and renowned stained-glass lantern, is a standout feature of Liverpool’s skyline.
As the largest Catholic cathedral in England, it remains a celebrated symbol of post-war architectural excellence.
The initial phase of the work with Buttress includes conducting the cathedral’s first-ever Quinquennial Inspection. This evaluation will provide key insights into the building’s condition, informing a thorough conservation and maintenance strategy.
Additionally, Buttress will develop a strategic masterplan to guide the cathedral’s future. This plan will address priorities such as improving the visitor experience, optimising space, enhancing environmental sustainability, and ensuring financial stability. It will serve as a comprehensive framework for our ongoing development and renewal.
Buttress Director Matthew Burl commented: “The Metropolitan Cathedral is iconic; it is a privilege to work with the Archdiocese to collaboratively help envisage its future. Our masterplan reflects the cathedral’s standing in the city and the communities it serves.
“It articulates the vision and provides a framework for conservation and renewal, sensitively building on the way the cathedral works as a place of worship, and stands as a landmark for all types of visitors. Side by side Buttress’ masterplan and QI will help us to understand the building’s present and shape its future, protecting its significance through that process.”
Reflecting on this new partnership, Canon Anthony O’Brien, Cathedral Dean, said: “Buttress has a proven track record and an impressive reputation in the maintenance and development of listed buildings.
“The partnership between the Metropolitan Cathedral and Buttress will enable us to plan ahead and ensure the long-term future and enhancement of this building which is internationally known and loved. We very much look forward to working with them.”
