Labour’s North West Regional Director visits Liverpool Hope University
Politics and International Relations students had the opportunity to learn from one of the Labour Party’s leading local figures as part of a lecture series which aims to inspire the next generation of politicians.
Anthony Lavelle, Regional Director of Labour North West, visited Liverpool Hope University on Monday 25 November to speak as part of the Professionals in Politics and International Relations programme.
A Hope alumnus, Anthony discussed his political journey, sharing an insight into his role and advising students on how they can make the most of transferable skills to forge a political career.
The lecture series is organised by the MA in Politics and International Relations in conjunction with Student Futures and Hope’s Careers team to give students access to the knowledge and expertise which will help them as they look to establish a career in the industry.
“This was a great opportunity for students to think about their professional journey from those working in our field,” said Dr Catalina Montoya Londono, Associate Professor in International Relations in the School of Humanities.
Chris Biggs, the University’s Head of Student Development and Employability added: “It is important for students to hear from professionals working in sectors that are relevant to their subjects.
“We aim to encourage students to learn more, be curious and explore all potential career options.
“The Professionals in Politics series allows students to hear from a diverse range of people and professions who have had different career journeys. This helps provide some realism about the labour market and also inspires and informs their own career choices and pathways.”
MA in Politics and International Relations student Willim Kelly, a Labour Party member who attended the event, said it was “great to have the opportunity to discuss current political issues and structures with Anthony.
“As a Hope graduate who is looking for their first employment opportunity in UK politics, it was invaluable to get his insights into how the government is planning to tackle the most urgent social issues our coutry is currently facing, and how those of us who believe passionately in creating a better society can find opportunities to contribute to this.”
Liverpool Hope is one of four Catholic universities in England.
