Papal Nuncio to visit Northampton as part of St Thomas Becket events

The Papal Nuncio will visit the Diocese of Northampton from Thursday 6th – Saturday 8th July.

Whilst in Northampton he will celebrate Mass for the Feast of the Translation of the Relics of Saint Thomas Becket at 11am on Friday 7th July and Bless and formally open the new St Thomas Centre behind the Catholic Cathedral.

The Apostolic Nunciature is the diplomatic office of the Holy See and headed by the Apostolic Nuncio. The current Nuncio is His Excellency, Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendía. His Excellency was appointed by his Holiness Pope Francis on April 13, 2023.

The word nuncio derives from the Latin word ‘nuntius’ meaning messenger or envoy. The Apostolic Nuncio is accredited to the Holy See and not to Vatican City. Therefore, although he is ranked equal to ambassadors (Apostolic Nuncio to the court of St James) they carry a unique diplomatic mission.

The Nuncio also serves as a liaison between the Holy See and the Catholic Bishops Conference. The Nuncio to Great Britain is also the nuncio to Gibraltar.

More information will be available in due course.
