Moving tributes paid to Liverpool assistant head who was “one of life’s good guys”

A Merseyside school has paid tribute to a much-loved teacher and “proper boss fella”.

Marvin Clarke was a teacher and assistant head at Maricourt Catholic High School in Maghull at the time of his death. Mr Clarke died last week following a short illness.

Hundreds of tributes have since poured in for Mr Clarke who was described as one “one of life’s good guys”.

Tracy Hatton, Head Teacher of Maricourt High School, also paid tribute to the assistant head teacher on behalf of the school.

She said: “As a school community we are devastated by the passing of Mr Clarke. A highly valued and well-respected member of staff, Mr Clarke was very popular with staff and students alike.

“He will be very sadly missed by all at Maricourt. We send love, prayers and kind thoughts from all the Maricourt family to his wife, sons and his extended family.

“Mr Clarke was not only a well loved and respected member of Maricourt’s school community but a very well-known face across the education landscape in Sefton, having previously worked for both IMPACT and Savio Salesian College.

“When we return to school in September, we will enable all to pay tribute to Mr Clarke. For the moment, we pray that God will bring Mr Clarke into His loving arms and grant him peace and rest.”

A message on the Maricourt Catholic High School Facebook page said: “we are deeply saddened to share the news of the death of Mr Marvin Clarke, Assistant Headteacher and Business Studies teacher here at Maricourt. Mr Clarke was loved by many and was a highly valued friend, colleague, teacher, mentor and leader in school, as well as a loving husband, dad, brother and son.

Mr Clarke had also previously taught at The Salesian Academy of St John Bosco in Bootle. In the statement, on its social media pages the school said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that our valued friend, colleague and teacher Mr Marvin Clarke has died. Please may we ask that the Salesian community remember his family in their thoughts and prayers.

“Mr Clarke was a much loved and respected member of staff, whose hard work and dedication over many years service was appreciated by his colleagues and pupils.”

Colleagues and former pupils also paid tribute to Mr Clarke. Beth Thompson said: “Absolutely heartbreaking news. Beyond being a brilliant and genuinely caring teacher, he was just an all round lovely, funny and friendly person. So many great memories and funny stories from our business lessons at Savio.

“‘Teaching is one of the noblest of professions.’ Rest in peace, Sir – one of life’s real good ones.”

Heather May said: “Devastating, such a great influence he had on my life, one of the reasons I’m a teacher now. Rest in peace.”
