Downside School and St Vigor & St John Primary hold joint Olympics celebration
Two Somerset schools have come together for an incredible joint celebration focusing on the Olympics.
Yesterday (27 June) Downside School welcomed 218 pupils and 28 members of staff from St Vigor & St John Primary School in Chilcompton, Radstock to celebrate the start of the Olympic games in Paris, and the collaboration between the two schools.
The young pupils were divided into three groups and learnt French vocabulary, decorated flags, took part in a colour-coded treasure hunt, studied cities in France and the history and music of “La Marseillaise”, as well as learning about the ancient Olympic games, and decorating Greek vases, led by Downside staff and pupils.
After lunch, both schools and over a hundred parents and relatives, met in the Abbey Church for a short service commemorating the community and special partnership between Downside and St Vigor & St John. Afterwards the congregation followed Downside pupils Pawel, James and Erwin playing the trumpet, bagpipes and drums, as they led everyone to the Pavilion for a wonderful afternoon of sport and many cupcakes!
Head, Andrew Hobbs said,” We have a very strong partnership with Chris Chorley (Head) and St Vigor & St John school, and it was a great pleasure to be able to welcome everyone here to commemorate community and collaboration as well as the Olympics. Pupils and staff from both schools worked together to create an incredible day of learning and celebration, that we will all remember for many years to come.”
