Wolverhampton Catholic school to take handmade banner to Euros final
A Catholic school will be taking its homemade banner to help cheer on England at the Euro 2024 final against Spain on Sunday.
Pupils from SS Peter and Paul Catholic Primary Academy in Wolverhampton spent a whole day creating the “good luck” sign featuring flags and other logos.
The work caught the attention of Prince William and players Ollie Watkins and Harry Kane last month when they visited the team’s HQ at St George’s Park in Burton-upon-Trent as part of England’s send-off.
Fourteen lucky pupils were invited to represent the Wolves Foundation at a football festival for the Big Send Off on 10th June at St George’s Park.
Not only was this an incredible opportunity in itself, the day got better and better for the pupils as the special event was a star studded event and HRH Prince of Wales flew in to meet representatives from each school before spending time talking with all the teams on the pitch.
Prince William was accompanied by England Captain Harry Kane, Olly Watkins and Jill Scott.
After eight football matches, participants were invited down to the players’ hotel to give them a ‘Big Send Off’ as they boarded their coaches to leave for Germany. All of the crowd were delighted to be able to meet the players, wish them luck and get their signatures before they got on board.
Speaking to The Catholic Network Mr Jamie Morgan, Vice Principal, said: “What an honour it was to meet the Prince of Wales, we were very proud to introduce him to our pupils who talked to him about the sport they enjoy and their excitement about the Euros.”
“Our pupils also met Ollie Watkins and Harry Kane who were obviously the goal scorers putting them into the final,” said school Principal Mrs Jenny Byrne.
SS Peter & Paul said it is proud to work with The Wolves Foundation and Mrs Byrne, Principal, said that it was “an absolute privilege and honour to represent the Wolves Foundation and our school in a unique opportunity for very deserving and lucky pupils.”
Mr Morgan said he can’t not wait to bring the banner with him to the final in Berlin, sending video updates of his efforts to all the children.
“The pupils are delighted, they’re going to love this,” added Mrs Byrne.
