Enjoying afternoon tea is a classic pastime, but it can also help transform young lives

As we roll through the heady days of summer, who wouldn’t enjoy the delights of a traditional afternoon tea – especially when it’s for a good cause!

Afternoon Tea Week 2024 takes place from 12th – 18th Augu st and reflects the great British tradition of afternoon tea celebrated with family, friends or work colleagues.

This year it also coincides with the annual celebration of Every Child’s Birthday on 15th August, when World Village for Children give every child in their schools a birthday celebration with a meaningful gift and a cake.

The Sisters of Mary care for and nurture more than 20,000 children entrusted to them each year, and this annual birthday celebration is often their first experience of the simple joy of a birthday celebration.  It’s a small but powerful gesture that gives them new memories for the future and reminds them that, whatever their story and circumstances, they are loved and cherished.

So, if you choose to have your Afternoon Tea event on 15th August you’ll be joining thousands of smiling faces around the world as they look towards receiving the gift of a quality education and the promise of a better future.

There are many easy ways you can mark Every Child’s Birthday with an afternoon tea celebration – you could do it at home and invite family and friends around for a catch-up over tea and cake, you could meet up with others for a get-together at a local café, take a cake to work to share with your colleagues or just go on a picnic to your favourite place.

Whichever way you’re able take part, sharing a brew is human connection – it’s about bringing people together and giving something back. If you can also encourage your guests to make a donation the money raised will help World Villages for Children and the Sisters of Mary continue to provide the unique love, care and vital education that so many children around the world depend upon.

Education is the key to ending poverty, and your support and kindness on Every Child’s Birthday will help the Sisters to continue their mission so that the children who come to them can learn skills, develop their potential, escape poverty and have hope for a brighter future for themselves and generations of their families.
