University of Bedfordshire appoints Catholic parishioner as new Lead Chaplain

The University of Bedfordshire has appointed a Catholic parishioner of Sacred Heart, Flitwick as Lead Chaplain to the University.

Helen Burgess, formerly chaplain to St Thomas More secondary school in Bedford was commissioned at a service in St Mary’s Church of England parish church in Luton on 24th October.

Bishop David Oakley of Northampton attended and gave the address and final blessing. He shared the gifts of three saints; St Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa), Therese of Lisieux and Teresa of Avila.

“Dear friends in the Tree House team, listening is a very difficult skill, I encourage you in your ministry of listening to the students who visit the Tree House,” said Bishop Oakley.

The Tree House is an informal multi-faith facility and hosts a series of events throughout the year including film nights, discussions on a range of topics and get-togethers. Students are also able to pop in.

At the commissioning, Helen was supported by many members of the Catholic community from her home parish in Flitwick, including Fr Jerry Manomy the parish priest and priests from across Luton.
